DESCRIPTION
These are three videos developed for display on Volarte's 360° vertical screens at Ezeiza International Airport (Argentina) and El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá (Colombia).
Concept: Argentinian Art in Movement
CONTEXT
We were tasked with creating 360° animations for Ezeiza Airport. We selected three amazing artworks from Argentina's extensive art collection to showcase.
The artwork I animated was "Relieves del Teatro Colón" by Luigi Trinchero.
I must admit it was a personal choice because I love music, and the sculptures from the Colón Theatre were inspired by music, acting, and other arts.
Airports do not allow sound in content, but for an accurate acting, I arranged a MIDI version of how "La Cumparsita" (one of the most famous Tangos of all time) could sound on the four instruments chosen by Luigi for the sculptures. I recorded myself playing the guitar chords. Then, I requested the animation team to act as if they were each musician, to embody different charisma and personalities as references. And because they were out of tempo (none of them are musicians, but they did their best in acting), I manually animated using Non-Linear animation on repetitive motions.
For the face animation, I used motion capture with the sculpt morph method and an open-source software called Meow Face, in addition to Blender. It wasn't perfect, so I had to manually adjust the curves of the blend shapes animation.
Modeling, sculpting, and rigging were relatively fast because the main body is shared by all the characters, and the only things that changed were the instruments and hair, linked with constraint control depending on each case.
And for the other animations my role was as lead director of the team, helping the other animators on tech issues, and fixing minor details like camera projection on textures and simulations.
